Following a brilliant academic career as a medical student and a surgical resident at Yale University, Professor Jose F. Patiño returned to Bogota, Colombia, where he is recognized as the leading influence in the modernization of surgical practice and teaching, as well as in the development of medical education programs. He has maintained solid ties with his medical alma mater, Yale University, where he holds a teaching position as Visiting Professor of Surgery.

In the 1960s he founded and developed a school of "scientific surgery" in Colombia, and constructed strong surgical departments of international recognition, first at Hospital Universitario de la Samaritana, and then at Fundacion Santa Fe de Bogota. His pioneer work in surgical metabolism and clinical nutrition, and his classical textbook "Metabolism, nutrition, and Shock in the Surgical Patient" (fourth edition in progress) led to the strong development of this field in Colombia and Latin America. Another book, "Physiology of Respiration, Blood Gases, and Respiratory Insufficiency' has had five editions (last one also available in CD-ROM format).

He has had special interest in the field of surgical infection, and is the author of a monograph that has had two editions, Guide for the Use of Antibiotics in Surgery, and was the editor of an international symposium held in San Francisco, California, Surgical Infection. Also, he is one of the editors of a major book, Medical Aspects of the Volcanic Catastrophe of Nevado del Ruiz, that contains an important study pertaining the necrotizing infections of the soft tissues that developed in a large number of the survivors of that cataclysm.

He has had special interest in the field of necrotizing infections, and has published extensively in the subject, including chapters in major textbooks in the English language.

He is one of the founders of the Fundacion Santa Fe de Bogota, a state-of-the-art and technologically-advanced nonprofit and teaching medical center in Bogota..

He was one of the cofounders and major propulsors of the Latinamerican Surgical Federation (FELAC) and of the Panamerican Federation of Associations of Medical Schools (PAFAMS), and has been instrumental in establishing strong relationships between Latin American surgeons and the international surgical community.

He is member of a number of national and international academies and professional societies, an has been distinguished by prizes and awards. Highly respected as a master surgeon and teacher, he is a man of profound humanistic interests and accomplishments. His personal library, of over 12,000 volumes, is one of the richest in Latin America. He is an avid book collector and owns a precious collection of antique editions of Pliny the Elder's Historia Naturalis.

His current interest in biomedical informatics as applied to medical education and health care has led to the creation of the Colombian Biomedical and Health Sciences Data Bank and Network; he is the author of a monograph on the "The Computer, Cybernetics, and Information Theory: four Biomedicine to Infomedicine", and a "Computer Glossary for Health Personnel

Dr. Patino is an expert in opera, and currently is completing a biography on Maria Callas. His collection of CD Callas recordings, of over 150 albums (CD's), constitutes the basis for his biography on the inmortal soprano.

Professor J.F Patino is one of the most prolific authors in Latin America, with over 350 published papers and chapters, and some of his books and monographs have had several editions. Two of his latest books, one of then a major reference text, "Surgical Lessons", have appeared in CD-ROM format.
