Session 1 -- Monday, September 11, 2000
China Medical Board Presidents Council Meeting


The meeting with the participation of 22 Presidents and Vice Presidents of leading Chinese Medical Universities (as well as Grantees of China Medical Board) - was devoted to the problems of medical education. It was chaired by Dr. M. Roy Schwarz, President of China Medical Board of New York. After the introductory chairman's remarks and review of the present issues, the invited speaker Dr. Joseph C.K. Lee, Professor at The Chinese University of Hong Kong,  spoke about international aspects of medical education. The next speaker, Dr. Andrzej Wojtczak, Director of the Institute for International Medical Education, presented the organizational structure, tasks and work of the Institute. The presentations were followed by discussion in which there was a general support for the "global minimum essential requirements" being developed by the Core Committee of the Institute as a tool for improvement of the quality of medical education. Several Medical University Presidents expressed willingness to cooperate with the Institute in the implementation of "essentials" which, when enriched by the national and local requirements, will serve as a foundation for the modern curriculum. The selection of not more than six participating universities will be made after consulting the Ministries of Education and Health of the People's Republic of China. In second part of the session the representatives of selected universities presented information about the mergers of many of China's major medical universities and plans for the reforms of medical education.


Session 2  -- September 11-13, 2000
China Medical Board Grantees Meeting


In this meeting there were presentations by representatives of medical institutions from Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Nepal, Laos and Mongolia as well as China that have been supported by the grants from China Medical Board. In addition, there were several informative presentations by members of the Board of Trustees and invited speakers. The meeting was chaired by Dr M. Roy Schwarz. During the opening session the greetings to participants were conveyed by Chairman of the Board of Trustees Dr. Dwight H. Perkins, and a lecture on China's health system reform and development was presented by the Minister of Health of the People's Republic of China, Dr. Zhang Wenkang. During the different sessions of the meeting the following presentations were delivered: 1. "Genomics - Relevance to Medicine in the 21st Century" by Professor David C. Dale from the University of Washington, Seattle and with a response by Professor Ba Denian, President of Peking University College of Medicine, Beijing. 2. "Medical Education in the 21st Century" by Professor Ronald M. Harden from the Center for Medical Education, University of Dundee, Scotland and the response from   Professor Jordan J. Cohen, China Medical Board Trustee and President of Association of American Medical Colleges, Washington, DC. 3. "Informatics in the 21st Century" by China Medical Board Trustee Professor Don E. Detmer from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom and a response by Professor Wang Weiping, Dean and Vice President of Fudan Medical University, Shanghai. 4. "What is my Real Age?" by Professor Michael F. Roizen from the University of Chicago and a response from Professor Yu Hai, Associate Dean of Zhejiang Medical University, Hangzhou. 5. "Asia: A View from the Inside" by Professor Le Vu Anh, Dean of the Hanoi School of Public Health, Hanoi, Professor Wilawan Senaratana, Dean of the Faculty of Nursing, Chiang Mai University, Thailand, and Professor Tha Hla Shwe, Rector, Institute of Medicine 2, Yangon, Myanmar. "China - Asia: A View from the Outside" by China Medical Board Trustees Professor Dwight H. Perkins - Professor of Political Economy, Harvard University, Cambridge MA, Professor Mary Brown Bullock, President of Agnes Scott College, Decatur, Georgia, and Dr. Tom G. Kessinger, General Manager of Aga Khan Trust for Culture, Geneva.


Session 3 -- September 13-14, 2000
Meeting of the Board of Trustees


The open part of the meeting of the China Medical Board Trustees started with "A View from Inside China", a presentation by Professor Audrey Jakubowski and Professor Gerald Lazarus, consultants at Peking University Medical College.  Dr. Margaret F.C. Chan, Director of the Department of Health in Hong Kong, spoke on "Health Care in Hong Kong".

During the second part of the session, the Board of Trustees reviewed the implementation of the China Medical Board program and discussed the future program direction and strategies.
